Data Leak Prevention

What is Data Leak Prevention?

Data leak prevention is a business technology strategy which uses compliance enforcement to ensure that end users do not send sensitive or critical information outside of your business’ network. The term is also used to describe software products that help a network administrator control what data end users can transfer.

Why is it important?

A business always wants to protect its data. Malicious software is on the rise and data can sometimes be transferred outside of your network without your knowledge. Other times, Data Leak Protection will protect your business against data loss through a disgruntled employee or against employees taking client data with them.

How does it work?

The user workstation is where it all happens. Users work with business-critical data, access the internet, read emails, send documents to the printer and plug in their portable media. To enforce Data Leak Protection, a software agent is deployed to desired computers. This agent can be used to implement data handling compliance. This is achieved through disallowing screenshots on specific client database applications or preventing certain files from being sent to removable disk or via email to ensure business-critical data stays onsite. If you don’t want to use enforcement, this same model can be used just to monitor data activity.

Why haven’t I heard about this before?

In the past, solutions to enforce, monitor and implement Data Leak Protection were designed for the enterprise market only. New products, like ESET Safetica, scale down to a very small implementation and most importantly, do so at an affordable price.

This new product is a great fit for the NZ market and we feel it can help business ensure their intellectual property is safe, as well as fulfilling auditing compliance standards requirements.
